Pastoral Care at Coláiste Muire

  • Big Brother/Big Sister Mentoring

In 2011/2012 Coláiste Muire introduced a mentoring programme with the help and support of Foróige and a member of staff, Íníon Ní Dhroighneáin. Students from First Year, Transition Year and 5th Year participate in the programme, which has been established to provide support for First Year students and help them make a smooth transition from primary school to post primary. In Coláiste Muire, Íníon Ní Dhroighneáin links with the local BBBS Officer, to ensure the programme is running smoothly.

    So How Does It Work

Each Transition Year student (Big Brother/Big Sister) is matched with a First Year student (Little Brother/Little Sister) according to individual interests and hobbies. The programme matches first year students with fourth/fifth year students.

They meet once a week during the course of a school year and participate in games, sports, making lunch etc.. in the school.

Training sessions were provided by Foróige personnel, whereby our older students learned about the responsibilities associated with being mentors and First year students learned about their role as mentees.

    The Benefits

The mentoring programme will provide a support system for First year students, which helps them settle in with ease to secondary school.

The programme has also allowed the mentors to develop communication skills and improve social competency, which are aims of the Transition Year programme.

  • Class Tutors

Each class has a Tutor (Teagascóir Ranga) who encourages, supports and monitors the progress of pupils in a particular class. He/she will also liaise regularly with the Year Head (Ceannaire Bliana). A Class Tutor can assist in dealing with difficulties at an early stage, can build a positive morale in the class and contribute to a good year group spirit. In Colaiste Muire the role of class teacher is voluntary.
